The Role of Music In Early Development
Professor Laurel J Trainor is an Auditory Development researcher at McMaster University. This video is of her presentation to the Lullaby Talk at Carnegie Hall in June 2020. Trainor discusses some of her research into the role of music in early development.
Trainor states that “the world of the infant is musical”, something that the BBB Team has believed for some time. We know, through research, that babies perceive their mother’s voices as music. Trainor relates our experience with our mother’s singing to something very powerful and topical at the moment; music during the pandemic.
The highlight of this video for the BBB Team is a controlled study that Professor Trainor explains around 5:30. The study aimed to measure the effect of active weekly parent-and-infant music classes on musical development, language development, social development and brain development. The control group in this study had weekly passive listening classes.
